Airports

Depending on where you are coming from and what your plans are immediately upon arrival, you have a choice of numerous airports.  Here are 5 possibilities.  Click on the airport name for a link to their website.  If you have additional information or corrections please send them to us here.

Dublin Airport:

  • Approximately 275 km/170 miles
  • Drive time: 3.5 to 4 hours depending on route

Definitely the best airport to fly into if you prefer a non-stop flight.  According to Google there are 107 cities with nonstop flights from Dublin.  From Dublin you can take public transportation, rent a car, or get a car and driver to Dunlewey.

Shannon Airport:

  • Approximately 350 km/225 miles
  • Drive time: about 5 hours

Lots of direct flights from Shannon.  If you have time to spend getting to Dunlewey, flying into Shannon puts you in the best position to explore the Wild Atlantic Way.  See links to public transportation, car rental or hiring a driver.

Donegal Airport

  • 21.1 km/13 miles
  • Drive time: 30 minutes

Info from the Donegal Airport website:

“The airport is approximately a 15 minute drive from Dungloe and Gweedore, 45 minutes drive from Letterkenny with Donegal town one hours drive. Donegal Airport is situated on the west coast in the area of the Rosses/Gweedore.

Flights operate twice daily all year round from Donegal to Dublin Airport, with a schedule of up to six times weekly  from Donegal to Glasgow International Airport. See our Timetables page for up-to-date flight times.”

Although this is the closest airport to our destination, getting here from the US and many other destinations can be difficult.  For example, flights from NYC include either one very lengthy stop in Dublin, or two stops:  London & Dublin or London & Glasgow.

If you are flying in from somewhere else and expect to spend some time in or near Dublin or Glasgow before heading to Dunlewey you can expect a flight of under an hour.

Belfast Airport:

  • 165km/102 miles to 205 km/128 miles depending on route
  • 2.5 to 3 hours depending on route

If you are coming from the US, Orlando and Las Vegas have direct flights to Belfast Airport.  Starting in July, Norwegian Airlines will offer nonstop flights to Belfast from Stewart International Airport near Newburg NY and from TF Green Airport in Warwick, Rhode Island about 60 miles from Boston.  These flights are probably less expensive than most other airlines.  Here are links to the rates from Stewart and Green.  Stewart Airport is offering bus service between the airport and New York City timed to the Norwegian Air flights.

Other US destinations require flying through England or Scotland.   Travelling from the UK is obviously much more convenient.  Here’s the link to check if there are direct flights from your location.

City of Derry Airport:

  • 85 km/53 miles
  • Drive time: 1.25 hours

This is the second closest to our destination, but the airports it serves are very limited.
